3 tips for hiring a wedding photographer

When hiring a wedding photographer, it’s so easy to ask questions off lists from the internet and move on. Instead, be sure to have a real conversation with your potential wedding photographer. Learn more about their experience and what they bring to the table. I believe the following three categories can be interesting to learn about your potential photographer. I think these below conversation points will also be useful in helping you make an educated decision for booking:

EXPERIENCE

See if the photographer has photographed at venues similar to your venue before. They don’t need to have shot at your particular venue, but if you’re shooting in a dark ballroom and your desired photographer is used to shooting sunset elopements on the beach, they might not be properly equipped to handle the job. Ask your potential photographer if they’ve had any unexpected situations come up during a wedding day. Listen to their on-the-fly problem solving skills.

EQUIPMENT

Have no fear, you don’t need to know anything about cameras or lenses for this portion of conversation. But, it IS important to ask certain “technical” questions when hiring a wedding photographer. You should know if the wedding photographer that you’re about to hire has professional gear, backup gear, and you should have them talk through their file saving process and make sure they have a solid game plan for making sure that there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to your wedding photos.

For example, I bring 4 camera bodies to weddings, each camera records images on duplicate memory cards and when I get home, wedding files go on two separate hard drives as well as my computer. This might be overkill, but, knock on wood, every client has safely received their wedding images. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters. *Quick side note* I had gone over 150 weddings without having a camera break before and at one wedding I broke TWO cameras. I absolutely freaked out internally, but the bride and groom never knew (and still don’t). Backup gear seems unnecessary, until it’s necessary.

SHOOTING STYLE

When hiring a wedding photographer, a lot of brides seem to have an idea of the shooting style they’re looking for. Words used to describe a photographer’s style can be things like photojournalistic or classic. They can be words like light and airy, moody and contrasty (I definitely enjoy shooting the moody and contrasty stuff when the venue aesthetic allows for it!). While knowing what you want aesthetically for your wedding photos is important, what I’m talking about here is knowing how your photographer carries his/her self throughout the day. Are they more outspoken and can take charge when needed, or do they prefer to be quiet and unnoticed. Both can be good attributes, depending on what you’re looking for. Be sure to talk that out with your potential photographer.

All of this to say, when hiring a wedding photographer…

Make sure that you don’t go through the motions of asking a list of questions. We have a lot of meetings with potential couples and can probably tell you which website you got your list from. Instead, try to have an engaging conversation. Learn about the photographer. The photographer will be with you throughout the entire wedding day, so it’s important that you enjoy them as a person.
